Through the fervent work of the reddeners the whole nature began to ferment. All the salt of the earth seemed suddenly to
collect in this mountain-forest as if in a wonder-working boiling witch-kettle, and now it flowed in red foaming salt-streams out of the sour ground - as if through large sieves.

But also from all the plants and animals, that now chatted noisily, they streamed forth and down the mountain. First they created small steaming channels which later merged into simmering rivers, merging again into large boiling salty streams that flowed down into the plains.

“This is the great hour of the witches,” explained Sol to his sister.
“Together the sorceresses begin to boil all the world, until they can foretell mankind a bright destiny from the boiling kettle of the world.”

Now the blackeners and the whiteners, busy with each other, noticed the red lights and shadows, that came from the reddening moon-light, on their faces and in their clothes; but they also felt the strong unrest that spread everywhere in the heated nature; and with their feet they got into the red salt-flows which poured down the hill. They found everything fermenting and boiling.
Finally, when all of nature turned into a more and more inflaming, fermenting, bubbling and boiling turmoil and flared into wild talks, all three groups attacked each other making each other red, white and black.
But they also made all trees, shrubs, bushes, all flowers and the grass, all birds and animals, all stones and all earth and all the men in the mountain again and again white, red and black, so that the whole nature and all beings changed colour again and again, and all were seized alternately by deep sleep, restful alertness, and fermenting unrest; at the same time streams and streams of red salt flowed off.

The moon too appeared again in all her phases; and it seemed as if she had become used to the red light that she sent out from time to time.

And Mani too felt within her a motley succession of profound tiredness - which often led to sleep - and infinitely recuperative, restful, bright alertness; but often she also noticed growing unrest as if salty fire moved out of her, joining the down-flowing salt-streams.
