The following morning, to the bright sound of the sun, the gracious mermaids escorted Mani up to the surface of the ocean.

Playfully the beautiful fairies wrought their lilytender hands together, and singing and laughing they carried the girl up to the bright ship.

When Mani had boarded the vessel and looked back, the beautiful virgins waved at her once again. Like silvery and golden flames the hair of the water-fairies swayed in the morning-wind.
Finally the girls vanished in the froth of the light-blue waves.

Her companions told Mani that for them only a moment had passed, since she had jumped into the sea, but that the course of the stars had accelerated so much that it was morning already.
